Built in 1755, Cooks Cottage is the oldest building in Australia. This cottage was built in 1755 by the parents of Captain James Cook and was originally located in Yorkshire, England, and built by the parents of Captain James Cook, it was shipped to Melbourne as a gift by Sir Russell Grimwade to the people of Australia in 1934. Each brick was individually numbered, packed into barrels and then shipped to Australia, along with cuttings of the original ivy coverings.
Navigator and explorer Captain James Cook never lived in this cottage. He had been away from home for almost 10 years when his father built it. However this connection to the Cook family was enough to prompt Sir Russell Grimwade to transport the cottage to the other side of the world.
Incorporating centuries-old antiques, this English cottage, garden and the volunteers dressed in 18th century costumes, Cooks Cottage is is an intriguing step back in time. Entry is available via the Victorian Tourism Offiice located approximately 20 meters from the cottage and includes a comprehensive fact sheet for a self-guided tour. Printed information is generally available in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Thai, Indonesian, Japanese, German, French and Korean.
